Lead Carpenter – Formwork Specialist (Porirua)

Key Responsibilities

  1. Formwork & Concrete Structures (Primary Focus)
  • Set out, construct, install, and dismantle formwork for slabs, columns, beams, foundations, retaining walls, precast elements, and civil structures.
  • Ensure all formwork is constructed to correct dimensions, tolerances, and engineering specifications.
  • Install temporary works such as propping, falsework, bracing, and shutters.
  • Use laser levels, dumpy levels, and digital measuring tools for precise set-out.
  • Prepare reinforcement support structures (chairs, spacers, boxing fixings).
  • Liaise with steel fixers, concrete crews, and site engineers to ensure seamless workflow.
  • Assess formwork loads, pressures, and structural integrity in accordance with NZ standards.
  • Oversee stripping of formwork safely while protecting cast concrete.
  1. Advanced Carpentry Duties
  • Perform structural and finishing carpentry including framing, joists, trusses, cladding support structures, doors, windows, and internal fit-out.
  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, structural details, and construction plans.
  • Undertake layout and set-out tasks with high accuracy.
  • Install structural timber, LVL beams, plywood, bracing systems, and architectural elements.
Required Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills

  • Expert knowledge of formwork construction, concrete behaviour, and temporary works.
  • Ability to build complex formwork to exact tolerances.
  • Skilled in shuttering, boxing, and structural timber carpentry.
  • Strong understanding of structural loading, pour sequencing, and curing requirements.
  • Able to identify design issues and propose practical solutions.
NZ Qualifications & Certifications
Minimum Requirements


  • New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4)
    OR recognised international qualification assessed by NZQA.
  • 3–7+ years carpentry experience, including substantial time in formwork-heavy environments.
  • Site Safe Passport or ConstructSafe Level 2.
  • Full NZ driver licence.
Preferred / Highly Advantageous

  • Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) – Carpentry.
  • Working at Heights, EWP, and Confined Space certifications.
  • Temporary Works Supervisor or equivalent training.
  • Experience in civil/infrastructure projects (bridges, culverts, retaining structures).
