What Is the Green List Work to Residence Pathway?

The Green List is part of New Zealand's immigration policy designed to attract highly skilled workers into key industries. The Work to Residence (WTR) pathway allows eligible candidates to apply for residence after 24 months of employment in a qualifying role with an accredited employer.

This helps address skill shortages across infrastructure, construction, and essential services while giving migrants a long-term future in New Zealand.

New Trade Roles Being Added from 18 August 2025

The following trades will be added to the Green List Work to Residence pathway:

  • Fibrous Plasterer

  • Metal Fabricator

  • Motor Mechanic (General)

  • Road Roller Operator

  • Roof Plumber (including Roofers)

  • Scaffolder

  • Solid Plasterer

  • Stonemason

  • Vehicle Painter

  • Wall and Floor Tiler

From 18 August 2025, if you're working in one of these roles in New Zealand for 24 months for an accredited employer—and meet all other criteria—you can apply for residence.

SMC & Green List Wage Thresholds Are Also Changing

In addition to the new roles, Immigration New Zealand is updating the wage thresholds for the following residency categories:

  • Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

  • Green List – Work to Residence

  • Green List – Straight to Residence

From 18 August 2025, applicants must earn at least $33.56/hour, in line with the updated median wage from Statistics New Zealand (June 2024).

⚠️ Important: This change does not apply to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), which is still based on the market rate for each occupation.

Wage is just one part of the application, you’ll also need to meet additional criteria such as work health, character and English language
