Site Safe New Zealand recently held their annual Evening of Celebration. This night celebrates what progressive Health and Safety work in construction looks like across the country.
Tradestaff were excited to have been named as a finalist in the Safety Contribution for a Team Award category, and were even more delighted that at the event we were announced as the winner in this category.
The night was an enjoyable mix of culture, comedy, and inspirational talks. Hearing about the nominees and the positive impact they’re having on safety showcased what can be done to improve injury outcomes in New Zealand.
Recognising People-Driven Safety
Tradestaff’s Safety Team, made up of Amanda Flavell and Claire Pattinson, appreciates Site Safe recognising that a business entirely based on people is an important cog in building safer outcomes on site.
If PCBUs receive on-hire workers who:
Already know what good safety looks like
Feel confident raising concerns
Can suggest better ways of working
Report incidents
Speak the language of safety
Then they can easily transition onto site and engage more effectively with the safety processes of each business.
Communicating Across A Diverse Workforce
Tradestaff’s Safety Team have been working to effectively inform and communicate safety information not only with internal staff, but also with their on-site workers.
Tradestaff has a large, diverse group of workers. With workers spread across 10 regions, spanning many ages, backgrounds, and experience levels, we understand our communication must be flexible and inclusive.
Keeping The Message Consistent
Amanda and Claire stay up to date with health and safety legislation and ensure key information reaches branch consultants — and ultimately, workers on site.
We do this through:
The Safety Team’s goal is to enable all workers to:
Understand what good safety looks like
Know what they can expect on sites
Understand each stakeholder's responsibilities are
Have open dialogue by creating a psychologically safe space
Ultimately, we’re working towards the goal of reducing serious harm injuries.
Tradestaff And Site Safe — A Longstanding Relationship
Site Safe and Tradestaff have both operated for over two decades, with Tradestaff a member for most of that time.
Through Passport Training, H&S catchups, SiteWise, and the annual awards, Tradestaff recognises Site Safe’s role in pushing safety education and innovation across construction — ultimately benefiting our workers.
Turning Knowledge Into Action
The entry that Tradestaff submitted in 2025 highlighted that while the Safety Team have knowledge of H&S, they must ensure this information is turned into actionable processes for the three key groups:
Our consultants
Our clients
Our workers
Respecting the three groups’ unique roles in the recruitment journey means they can be engaged with in a way that helps them understand their responsibilities and all be able to work better, together, to achieve safer outcomes.
Teamwork And Technology
The Tradestaff SLT place the safety of our workers as the number one priority of how we do business. The Tradestaff Safety Team have also worked closely not only with each branch, but with Senior Leadership and the Tech Hub.
Tradestaff's internal Tech Hub of four people regularly meet with the Safety Team to understand the challenges and goals faced each week.
Our Tech Hub helps create practical solutions so our clients, consultants, and workers receive and understand safety info in a range of ways. As IT grows and improves, it's great to have an internal group that ‘gets’ on-hire labour and can problem-solve to work towards a reduction in injuries.
Safety Is An Ongoing Commitment
Beyond the celebration, we know the work is ongoing. It makes us work harder to ensure that the actions we ask of our consultants and workers have meaning and can help them move towards safer outcomes.
Tradestaff want existing and potential clients to see that working with a safety-oriented on-hire labour agency has positive benefits for all. Through winning this award, we are proud to be the benchmark of good safety in our industry — helping us become preferred suppliers to clients working out in the field.
By supporting the safety goals that Tradestaff have, clients can ensure that they're making the best decisions possible for the people undertaking the work — and ultimately, people is what safety is all about. Workers should be going home each day to enjoy life and make the most of their time outside of work!
