Job Description – Bricklayer (Residential Construction)Purpose of the RoleTo construct, repair, and finish brick and block structures on residential building sites in line with architectural drawings, specifications, and building codes. The role requires precision, safety awareness, and the ability to work efficiently within a construction team.
Key Responsibilities- Interpret and follow construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
- Set out foundations, walls, and other structures accurately using string lines, spirit levels, and plumb lines.
-Ensure materials, tools, and mortar mixes are prepared and ready for daily tasks.
- Lay bricks, blocks, and other masonry units to build walls, partitions, and structures..
- Form door and window openings, arches, and install lintels as required.
- Cut and shape bricks or blocks for fitting around openings, corners, or irregular spaces.
- Point and joint brickwork neatly to ensure weatherproofing and appearance.
- Construct chimneys, fireplaces, and other decorative or structural features where required.
- Clean and finish work areas, removing excess mortar and maintaining tidy brickwork.
- Check alignment, levels, and plumb of work throughout construction.
- Ensure all work meets New Zealand Building Code (or relevant regional code) standards.
- Collaborate with site managers, builders, and other trades to meet project deadlines.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Work safely on scaffolding and elevated platforms.
- Follow site safety procedures, hazard controls, and emergency protocols.
- Handle heavy materials safely and assist with general site housekeeping.
Skills & Attributes Required- Strong practical skills and hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
- Knowledge of different mortar mixes and bricklaying techniques.
- Physical fitness and stamina for lifting and repetitive tasks.
- Attention to detail for neat and structurally sound work.
- Teamwork and communication skills to work alongside other trades.
Qualifications & Experience- Trade qualification in bricklaying or masonry (preferred).
- Experience in residential construction sites.
