What You’ll Be Doing
- Operate horizontal directional drilling rigs for trenchless underground utility installations, including telecommunications, power and water services.
- Set up and operate drilling equipment, completing pilot bores and pullbacks while monitoring bore direction, depth and alignment.
- Work closely with drill locators, spotters and ground crews to identify existing services and maintain safe clearances around live utilities.
- Read site plans, service plans, bore profiles and drilling specifications, selecting suitable drill heads, tooling and reamers for ground conditions.
- Mix and manage drilling fluids and connect drill rods, reamers, heads and other drilling attachments as required.
- Assist with potholing, excavation, entry and exit point preparation, reinstatement and site clean-up.
- Complete pre-start checks and routine maintenance, report equipment faults, maintain drilling records, and follow site safety, permit and traffic-management requirements.
- Proven experience as an HDD Operator / Horizontal Directional Driller.
- Full NZ Class 1 driver licence.
- Class 2 driver licence would be beneficial.
- Strong understanding of safe drilling practices around underground and live services.
- Ability to work effectively with locators, ground crews, supervisors and other contractors.
- A safety-focused approach and ability to follow site-specific procedures.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
