Commercial Construction Continues to Drive the Waikato Market

Across Hamilton, Cambridge and the wider Waikato, commercial construction continues to provide solid employment opportunities.

According to Zack, the market is tracking steadily, with hiring activity sitting where it would normally be for this time of year. While winter has naturally slowed some areas of civil construction, commercial projects continue to create demand for experienced tradespeople.

There are also several commercial and infrastructure projects expected to begin over the coming months, giving employers confidence and creating additional opportunities throughout the region.

Skilled Trades Remain the Hardest Roles to Fill

One trend that continues across Waikato is the shortage of highly skilled tradespeople.

Qualified commercial carpenters remain one of the most sought-after roles, with employers competing for experienced workers who can contribute from day one.

Experienced stainless steel and aluminium fabricators, along with skilled MIG welders, are also consistently in demand across Hamilton and the wider Waikato.

Interestingly, electricians are one trade where supply has improved following the completion of several large solar projects. However, Zack believes that could change quickly if another large renewable energy project gets underway.
